Meet Us

Behind every stone, a story. Behind every service, a community.

The chapel is fieldstone and bell and rose window — but the Stone Church is its people. Volunteers, worship leaders, neighbors. The ones who keep the doors open.

— Who We Are

Open to people, open to God.

If you are looking for a church that will welcome you — if you have ever felt excluded or marginalized in the past — we invite you to join us here. The Stone Church welcomes all seekers. — Cragsmoor Stone Church

Cragsmoor's historic Stone Church is the spiritual home for an open and affirming community as well as a spiritual space sacred to thousands of people who come from around the world to experience the chapel's serenity and beauty.

As you walk through the beautiful mahogany front door, you will face a stained-glass window based on the words of the prophet Isaiah: "For my house shall be a house of prayer for all peoples" (Isaiah 56:7). On the window are symbols from eight of the world's major religions, from Christianity and Islam to Buddhism and Native American faiths.

Our community comes from many different traditions — Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist, and Jewish. We are gay and straight, married and single, young and old, and we find common ground in the affirming spirit of this remarkable place.

— A Welcome

If you're reading this, the door is already open.

You don't need to write us, RSVP, or join anything. You can show up Sunday morning, sign nothing, sit in any pew, and slip out before the closing hymn if that's what your heart needs that week.

You can also stay for hours. Walk the grounds. Read in the side garden. Ring the bell. Whatever brought you here is enough. We don't ask for more.

What we will tell you is this: this chapel has been holding open space on the Shawangunk Ridge since 1897. Through wars, depressions, divisions in the wider church, and the ordinary heartbreaks of three generations of families. It is still here. Still open. Still listening.

We hope it holds something for you too.

With warmth from the ridge, — The Friends of the Stone Church · Cragsmoor, NY
